High Load - Low CPU and Mem Usage
Hello, I have a RHEL4 production webserver that is running very slowly. I logged in and found the load at 22, however there are no processes using more than 1% of cpu and there is plenty of available memory. I'm going to search the archives, of course, but since this is happening right now I decided to post for input as well. With no obvious signs of the cause of the load, where should I look next? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, I had not ever heard of that site before. I run a bunch of Fedora boxes too and figured the resolution could be found here.

Oh, so you use term load of 22, meant %CPU 22. Ok, got ya.

Load is calculated not based on how hard something is running or how much memory it's using or how much disk its reading. Load is based on how many processes you have in the run queue. This means that if there is some slow poke process hogging the disk and the rest of them want to access it too, they get put into a queue, where they wait their turn. The longer they remain in that queue, the higher the calculated load average. There is some bottleneck in your system, which from what you said earlier, points at neither the processor nor the memory, suggesting that you have some other bottleneck on the system. My knee-jerk reaction would be to check your I/O usage and see if your disks are keeping up, but that's just a first thing to check.
