    F7 install: DVD drive not detected (PATA, MSI, Pioneer DVR-111BK)

    I have tried to install Fedora 7 on my new system. So far, no luck. The error is that the system cannot find a DVD-ROM driver or at least cannot read the stage2 image from the DVD-ROM.

    My system is as follows:
    * AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+, with Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower Cooler
    * MSI K9A Platinum Crossfire (Socket AM2)
    * Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II
    * Pioneer DVR-111BK 16x16 DVD<B1>RW

    I am reluctant to download the stage2 image from ftp just to have the install tell me that I don't have a hard drive (which was happening with the RC I tired).

    Anyone has a similar system that worked?

    kierun,

    Try adding irqpoll as a kernel option.

    Sadly, this did not work.

    After spend a little while investigating some more, it appears that the DVD is the source of the problem. I can find my hard disk but the DVD remains hidden.

    Anyone managed to get F7 working with a Pioneer DVR-111BK 16x16 DVD<B1>RW?

    Same problem with Pioneer drive and F7

    I am having the same problem with Fedora 7. I have a slightly different model, the:

    Pioneer DVR-110BK and not the Pioneer DVR-111BK as some other here have mentioned.

    When I boot from this dvd drive using the Fedora 7 i86_64 or the i386 disk it will start the install but suring the text part of the install it finally says that it cannot find the disk and ejects the disk tray.

    I finally installed F7 by booting from the dvd and then pointing the install to a iso image on my portable drive. After installing I still cannot use my drive. I can put in a music cd and it will come up in soundjuicer and show the cddb info etc, but cannot actually access the disk to play the audio.

    I'll post any solutions that I may find, but I am at least relieved to know that it is not just me at this point.

    Pyonox,

    Yeah, I was thinking of borrowing a USB DVD drive from work and installing with that.

    Thanks.

    Still looking...

    I have yet to find a solution, short of buying a different brand of dvd drive, prob would go with LG or Plextor. Anyways here is a link to another site I found that is experiencing the same problem.

    I have gotten F7 installed with my workaround above, has anyone else gotten it installed, and if so did your dvd drive have future problems like mine, or was it ok once is was installed for you?

    Borrowed a UBS DVD drive from work. Fedora installed without too much of a problem -- Yeah, cannot create a swap partition then any other partition cause an "unhandlee exception". Nice.

    Still, that's the way to install Fedora 7 if you have this DVD drive.

    I have had the same problem with Fedora 7. I have a Samsung SATA drive. These are the best DVD drives around and widely supported. I have fallen back to Windows XP and running cygwin yet again.

    I just read an article citing that Linux has wider hardware support than Windows. This has not been my experience. In the last 10 years I have visited this Linux thing many times and given up because something somewhere is not supported (mostly graphics cards).

    Just recently I tried installing centos on top of Dell Ubuntu machines and the sata chipset was not supported. There seems to be a lack of testing here. People are available to test and provide feedback but there is no organization.

    What happened to the things I was told that things get fixed faster in the open source world:
    => user reports a problem
    => community rallies because they want the best product out there and a fix is delivered in a flash

    I have never seen this to be the case. Windows has and always will be more reliable with any given installation.
