serious system slowdown

hi gang,

just within the last couple of days my FC6 box has slowed down to a snail's pace. the login screen takes ALOT longer to pop after nvidia drivers load... once i enter my login info the login window sits there for like 30-60 secs before contiuing to my desktop. once at the desktop a terminal widow (always open that first) can take upto 1-2 minutes to pop & in general everything is just slow slow to respond. sluggish doesn't even begin to describe the difference from what i am used to.

now within the last couple of days i did fool with a login theme which i have since put the kaibosh on... i have also been doing alot of ssh between laptops & this FC6 box the last couple days, but nothing out of the ordinary.

any ideas where i can start looking for the source of the change & what i might be looking for? i survive in linux a-ok but am no linux guru to be certain.

any help or pointers in the right direction would be awesome.

thanx

I'd start by taking a look at what services are starting up at boot time and checking to see what's utilizing much of the processor by running the "top" command in a terminal.

Your services are located in System/Administration/Services and you can compare them with the guide here:http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-services-fc6.html

Beagle seems to come to mind as many people have had problems with it using way too many system resources, although your situation could be different. It's just what I would take a look at first. You could also check your logs to see if you're getting any strange errors which might explain the problem.

ok what a n00b or perhaps b00b would be the better description. i changed my comp name & domain without updating /etc/hosts & it looks like name lookup was hanging or just wouldn't stop trying to resolve.

oh well live & learn i spose.
