So gaming works fine, videos are fine. It's just compiz I'm having a problem with. I also tried your compiz packages, with nearly identical errors. It was a little more verbose about 'try with the --replace' switch, but it wouldn't restart metacity when it failed .

What should I try next?

Try waiting for the next ATI driver to be released as the present driver is crap ( I am friggin sick of ATI )

Leigh, you state that this driver doesn't work with the 2.6.23 kernels. What if I have that kernel? Do I have to downgrade? They're the most recent, aren't they? Not trying to do dual, just trying to get decent screensaver speeds for my ants and what-not! ;^)

Actually, here's the problem. I get a decent glxgears rate - something over a thousand, but my screensavers are horribly slow. At work now, but had a minute to ask the question. I tried the fglrx driver to no avail, but when I ran fglrx-config-display enable, it returned "Command not found". I searched for fglrx-config-display and could not find the command.

I'll stop here. Thanks for your service to this whole community!

P.S. I've just read the ATI/NVIDIA notes from https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedo.../msg01565.html referenced on the Hardware forum sticky. Since I can't remember what I've done on this system - I've used it off and on since F7 came out - I'm going to obey the admonition in the redhat sticky to uninstall any ATI drivers I can find and run a full yum update to get back to a clean state, then try the fglrx from Livna again.

I'll stop here. Thanks for your service to this whole community!

Running Fedora 7 on an AMD 1.4Ghz box, 1.25GB RAM, ATI 9600 AGP card, Epox 8KHAL mb

Unhappy problem configuring 3D acceleration on Fedora 8

I get some problems trying to enabling 3D acceleration on Fedora 8
My graphic card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (integrated/Motherboard).
Probably it can be unsupported, but i'm not sure, because it works very good with Ubuntu "Gutsy Gibbon" and with all previous Fedora versions.

The problems I get are these:

1) when i try to install package xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit i get:

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# yum install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
No package xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit available.
Nothing to do
2) when i launch service fglrx restart i get:

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# service fglrx restart
Checking for module fglrx.ko: [FALLITO]
fglrx.ko for kernel 2.6.23.1-42.fc8 was not found. [ATTENZIONE]
fglrx DRI will not be enabled until one is found. [ATTENZIONE]
where "Fallito" is like "Fault" and "Attenzione" is "Warning" or something like it.

3)
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.0.2)
why vendor string result Mesa and why not Ati Technologies ... ?
If I am not wrong I think Mesa drivers are installed by default with Fedora 8, is it right?

4)
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# glxinfo

I made all steps correctly, but i don't understand why with last Ubuntu version Rendering works correctly and my graphic card is supported, instead with Fedora 8 it doesn't work?

Thanks.

I just went through the instructions again and it worked! I don't know what I did/didn't do the first time. The only catch was that I had to actually reboot, not just restart X in order to get it setup. Before I rebooted, even thought I did the service fglrx restart, fglrx-config-display enable and the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, but was getting no Direct Rendering before the restart. I also got a frame rate of around 200fps! Not good! But now, I have around 3,000fps and my screensavers work wonderfully! Thank you SO MUCH!

I made all steps correctly, but i don't understand why with last Ubuntu version Rendering works correctly and my graphic card is supported, instead with Fedora 8 it doesn't work?

Thanks.
You need to reboot into the new kernel-2.6.23.1-49.fc8 ( this is the old one "kernel 2.6.23.1-42.fc8" )

post

rpm -q kernel

and

uname -r

Thanks, I have configured grub to load the new kernel version that was already installed and now it works very good, rendering too!

Can ack that.

No prob on my laptop with NVIDIA Graka (Compiz works out of the box), but a lot of probs with my Radeon Mobile X1600.

No working compiz, horrible performance on desktop (moving terminals around gets the CPU to 100%), crashing amdcccle, see err...

Code:
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:
#0 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0 [0x2ec777]
#1 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0(xcb_xlib_unlock+0x31) [0x2ec8d1]
I've downgraded to 8.40.4

Code:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6747 (8.40.4)
Now I have less performance impacts on 2D (moving terminals around), at least this...

Compiz isn't possible to get running.

Crappy ATI drivers...
...this is why I prefer Nvidia Grakas on Linux (just my personal opinion)

Ok I have a fix for the compiz-fusion error in F8

Code:
* Opening CompizConfig context
* No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap with direct rendering context
... nor with indirect rendering, this isn't going to work!
* Using the GTK Interface
You will need to downgrade xorg-x11-server-Xorg

For i386

Code:
su
wget http://koji.fedoraproject.org/packages/xorg-x11-server/1.3.0.0/9.fc7/i386/xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7.i386.rpm
rpm -U --oldpackage xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7.i386.rpm

For x86_64

Code:
su
wget http://koji.fedoraproject.org/packages/xorg-x11-server/1.3.0.0/9.fc7/x86_64/xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7.x86_64.rpm
rpm -U --oldpackage xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7.x86_64.rpm

If this works OK for you you will need to ban xorg-x11-server-Xorg from updating

Code:
su
gedit /etc/yum.conf
and add this line

exclude=xorg-x11-server-Xorg

I haven't had a ATI card myself for over a year now and prefer Nvidia for support and ease of setup.
