Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
Hi,
I have an ATI 5870 and I just installed kmod-catalyst.x86_64 0:11.9-1.fc15.1 .... after several problems with glibs (solved) I have now Catalyst installed.
But I experience lag and poor performance ... around 6000 fps where I get around 13000 with my old TGX8000.
I notice that some of you have the same problem.... .were you able to fix this thing or you just waiting for new drivers?
thanks

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
I've got a HD 6850M and 11.9 is the first driver that actually supports my GPU.
At this point in time I've managed to get 1,451 frames in 5.0 secs = 290.3 fps. But hey it finally works, so I'm happy to wait for performance later on.
You may be in the same boat as me. Whereby this is the first iteration for support of our GPU's and thus it hasn't been fully tweaked performance wise.
I'd keep my eye out for 11.11 (end Nov) as all the odd numbered releases carry significant updates. Whereas the even numbered release months (usually around the middle of the month) carry more bug fixes.
Does anyone know of any thread that lists comparable performance stats for fgl_glxgears/glxgears in FPS so that I can see just how slow/fast my card should be more or less.

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
I installed it and rebooted. Everything ese works great except for Suspend/Hibernate. The system hangs when I try to resume. Any fixes for this?

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
If you having Suspend/Hibernate issues then the cause can be in several places, but not limited to the kernel, acpi, catalyst driver, other hardware drivers (especially bluetooth/usb), etc. To home in on the problem you can try and remove the catalyst driver and use the radeon one and see if Suspend/Hibernate works better, if so then you may be right and the culprit is the catalyst driver.
I see there is a new kernel in the updates testing repos, maybe try upgrading to it and see if you have better luck.

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
OK I uninstalled the proprietary driver and t turns out that was the issue... Thanks for the assistance, guys!
I guess i'll wait for the next release.
In case anyone else runs into the problem I just experienced - Fedora 15 kernel 2.6.40 may freeze on reboot after you uninstall these drivers using yum. This is caused by a misconfigured xorg.conf file. To solve this issue:
1. Restart and disrupt the GRUB boot countdown
2. Select Fedora 2.6.40... and press the 'a' key
3. Add the following (including the preceding space to the end of the line that pops up)
This takes you into text-only mode
4. Log in using your username and password and perform the following:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
reboot
Voila! Enjoy your freeze-free Fedora.

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
Hmm, the drivers are still shocking for me on Gnome 3.
Corrupt Text and what I like to call the Disco Ball effect.
Well, I'm staying on Ubuntu until this get fixed.

Come on MorphingDragon, give it another shot or better yet, why not try the KDE version? Everything works smoothly for me over here (well, except the proprietary drivers thing).
Here's a link to my list of things I did to make Fedora 15 a comfortable desktop environment:

ok MD, I bid you good luck. BTW i'm not on the Fedora dev team or anything of the sort, it's just that I've been so impressed with this distro that I find it heartbreaking when it somehow leaves a bad taste in someone's mouth.

Its nothing to do with Fedora. I just don't like anything else other than Unity, GNOME3 or Aqua.

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
One can make a reasonable facsimile of Gnome Shell with XFCE by turning off the desktop icons, placing one panel on top and making a second, vertical panel with auto-hide on the left which contains launchers for a number of apps I use regularly. Unlike Gnome 3 panel the XFCE panel will have working panel apps and the pager won't take activation of a menu item by key combination or mouse action to become visible as the pager can reside on the panel as in Gnome 2. It isn't perfect, but it is adequate, and lets me work without getting in the way and annoying me like Gnome Shell was doing. An added bonus is that it is much faster than Gnome Shell. I do not have any experience with Unity, but I have read that speed is also an issue there.
I have not tried the latest catalyst driver on my netbook as I don't have time right now. I have been waiting until the consensus in this forum is that it will work without difficulty, something I have not yet seen. Once the semester ends, I will have more time to work with it and may try it then.

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
I did everything according to your instructions, sitting and staring at the terminal window for 45 minutes, then reboot the computer to get .....the same result: "Out Of Range". Cannot move further out of the screen. My monitor: Viewsonic VA1931lwma-LED.
I gave up Ubuntu Gnome because of the same resolution problem, and switched to Fedora 15 hoping to run Gnome, but could not do better. Thanks in advance for any further suggestions.

OK, I take back what I said about the releases alternating between mid/end of the month cycles as I just went to ATI's website and we still on 11.9 as of 1 Nov .
Does anyone know if AMD/ATI is skipping 11.10 as releases are usually out by the last day of the month?

Seems one can get to the propriety installer for 11.10 off a link which I got off Phoronix from here http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTAwODg.
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/at...x86.x86_64.run
Can the RPM Fusion maintainer please schedule a build for it.
Thanks

11.10 is out so they just managed to sneak it in. I guess depending where you are in the world they could have missed the deadline from your perspective... Timezones are fun

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
Yes timezones are quite fun, not to even mention daylight savings
I suppose they sneaked it in late so they had more time to get a lot into it (I wish). But it seems they ramping up before the silly season get's here and we starved of a good release few a month or two again. But I shouldn't complain, being a developer myself I can relate to sometimes being on the receiving end of complaints by ungrateful/uneducated users.
