Wow, that's a pretty tough read. Did they do any beta testing at all? Luckily, we just recently completed the "upgrades" to XP in our corporate network so I don't see Vista rolling in for at least 4-6 years. Maybe by then they'll have some of this worked out.

Now I can see why Dell went back to supplying XP as a choice. Vista could also be credited for an upturn in Apple sales:

It's things like this that make me very glad I switched to Linux a couple months ago. There are so many things that were the same from Windows 95 all the way to Windows XP, and then they suddenly change them for Vista. Why? Things worked before. Anyway, this is most troubling, because I know my school (where I work part time in the IT department) will be installing Vista on at least some of the computers on campus by the fall semester, and I'll get to answer the tickets saying, "User having troubles copying files - very slow." This is gonna suck.

To be honest Gnafu (may I call you "Great"? ) linux has it's share of similar problems. If you search the threads awhile, you'll find complaints "Such and such worked under FC5 but isn't recognized under FC6". As new software is incorporated, sometimes it breaks other 'stable' software. The difference is that you'll find developers jumping in and fixing it as quickly as they learn of it. That's why Bugzilla is so important as a tool; it provides a direct link to the developers and gives them the info they need to work out the problem.

Someone described Windows as a gaming shell pretending to be an OS, maybe we should view Vista as agaming shell/media centre that can do a bit of computing on the side... sometimes?

Isn't Cairo out in 2 years or are you saying that you will be avoiding Cairo exactly for these type of reasons. And you will be praying to God that by that time Vista is somewhat functional?

Microsoft said Cairo will be out in 2 years. But that's in Microsoft years. So it's 5-10 years to the rest of us.

But who cares?? I'm starting to see that Windows Vista could be the biggest boon to the Linux community ever. With an OS this bad (and they progressively get worse with each release), people will get sick of crappy MS software and start looking elsewhere. Linux starts to look like a damn good alternative by then!

Mark my words. It's the beginning of the end for Microsoft.
