This is great news! I've been using ATI cards for a long time (started with a 4MB Xpert@Play in '97), and I've been satisfied with every one. Up until FC5 I had been using the xfree86/xorg free drivers, but I am currently using the ATI proprietary driver in FC6 for my Radeon 9250. The ATI driver is much faster than the xorg driver, so it'll be nice to have it open-sourced. Yay!!

Don't get too excited. It isn't done until the code is released.

That's old Web 1.0 thinking. In the new Web 2.0 paradigm, things are done before they're done!

You mean like Java being under GPL?

Will this convince Nvidia to follow?

That would be nice, though I still wouldn't buy an Nvidia card. But I'm sure they'll be feeling the heat now.

Hey, if ATi goes open source, I'm ditching everything that says nVIDIA and SLi on it.

I second that. I'm a big nVidia fan but heck - open source drivers AND folding, I'll be buying all ATI cards I can get.

this might be all well an good but how good will there updates be , ATI's lack of updates now should prove that maybe they'll still lack of having updates for each kernel released , so im not jumping the gun yet an rushing out to buy a ATI, Nvidia will follow suite IMO

I tried to like nVidia, but the Riva TNT card in my work PC convinced me not to. I know they've made better cards, but that one left a bad taste in my mouth.

You should really give them a second try - The machine I built earlier this year is the third nVidia card I use and I've got no complaints to date on any of the three.

That card is almost a decade old! Certainly things have changed in 9 years...

My 6200LE has done me rather well. I used to be an ATi fan before going over to Linux so next machine if they open source by then I'll get an ATi card instead. But nvidia has left a good impression on me though.
