most likely a dumb question...

ive got warcraft 3 in one hand, and my mouse in the other. With FC6 on my box, how can i manage to get it to work? i am completely in the dark with the whole concept of wine (not to mention its NOT considered an emulator....) and im finding it extremely difficult to find any kind of resource that explains how wine is used, how it works, etc. Even winehq has this kind of explanation thats like, "Well, screw it...if you dont know how it works oh well, because its too much of a bother to tell you...".

can anybody help me in tryingto understand wine for myself? so far, linux has just been a series of problems that i solve only by having other people tell me what to do, and it USUALLY works, but i just dont understand how. thanks!

oh, and btw...are there ANY success stories with steam, or does it just not work the way it should, ever...?

From www.winehq.com

How do I run an MS Windows program under Wine?

When invoking Wine, you must specify the entire path to the executable, or by file name only. For example to run Windows' solitaire, type any of the following:

*

wine sol or wine sol.exe (using the search path to locate the file).
*

wine c:\\windows\\sol.exe (using a DOS file name).
*

wine /usr/windows/sol.exe (using a UNIX file name).
*

wine "c:\windows\sol.exe" (using quoted DOS file name).

The path of the file will also be added to the path when a full name is supplied on the
command line.

Personally, i use "Cedega" to run "WarCraft III" into my FC6 distro.. its much easier and it work faster than windows.. im using Cedega to run C&C Generals, Counter Strike and Freedom Fighters.. u may try it as well

Regards,

Faris..

Wine in general:

Wine can even work in the "shell" in Linux, by that I don't mean the CLI, but rather "GUI shells" like GNOME or KDE, or whatever. You can get an .exe to run from the file manager (provided you are in the directory containing said .exe), useful for starting application installation programs.

Wine is more of an infrastructure than an emulator, I know it is kind of difficult to graps the concept, but suffice to say that it "enables" your Windows binaries to run on Linux. That is accomplished by telling Wine what program should it provide the required infrastructure to, that is in the form of a command, that's how you "interact" with it, and that's what your GUI shell does when invoking Wine from the file manager, calls a command and passes the program's path to it as its arguments. This gives Wine a lof of flexibility as it can work inside shell scripts (for instance to "convert" a Windows program into a "Linux command" which can then be placed into a binary path (/bin/, /usr/bin/, etc)). These are the most general asptects of Wine...

However, Wine can (and in some [most?] cases needs to?) be configured to behave in a certain way, for example to run the programs "inside a Windows window", which is known as "Desktop mode", meaning Wine will open a window which will become then the Windows' Desktop, it can also launch applications like part of the desktop (like any other application, only difference is the set of "widgets", like running KDE apps on GNOME, or viceversa, they kind of look different, but are usable)... This is the default behaviour and all is configurable through programs that as of late Wine builds are reachable from the menus... You can even manage Windows installed applications with a Wine uninstaller. The Wine configuration tool takes the shape of a Windows applet window, so it all (from behavior to looks) is familiar.

Wine and WC3.

With those notions of Wine, all you have to do to install WC3 is to actually open the CD drive window and (quite literally) double click the setup program, and install it. Recent Wine versions will even be able to place an icon on your desktop to start the program you just installed, so basically that's all there is to it... HOWEVER in the case in particular of WC3, you'd want to run it in OpenGL mode rather than D3D mode (less stress, and in this case, literally, less emulation [no need to convert D3D calls into OpenGL], hence better performance). To do that, you just have to right click the launcher icon, go to the launcher tab and append to the list of arguments '-opengl', this will force W3C to run in OpenGL.

Hope that helps.
