I installed a 32 bit version, But how do i upgrade to X86_64 bit version?

I had a friend install fedora core 6 on my computer and after he installed it i found out it was only an X86 version. I would like to upgrade my system to X86_64 without reinstalling the whole distro. I have countless files i would need to back up and burning them to cd is out of the question.

Sorry, but re-installation is required to move from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Why not run both?

As mentioned before, you can not "upgrade" from 32 bit to 64 bit but why don't you consider running both? If you resize your partiton and then install the 64 bit distro onto the new partition, you'll get the best of both worlds. Obviously, hd space could be an issue but with the size of hd's you can generally afford to throw a few different distro's onto a disk without issue.
