Try the PioneerMigrationSever and you'll see a bit of the whole server world with easy to use webmin interface
plus a desktop.

It is based off Ubunu edgy eft (6.14?)
And is designed for a SOHO one server machine network.
I am running it (at times) and I even updated it with 142 pakages, everything worked but the newer kernel had some error at that time. Probably fixed by now.

Look it up on distrowatch.com

Would this be a viable solution for a new user or should I wait until I learn a bit more?

Just check out my server setup howto, you can do it right from Fedora.

Both, it is very easy relative to do it your self how-to's, but one needs to know quite a bit about computers, the software, and configuring before you can do much beyound install a desktop and use the web browser and word processor.
Linux / Unix is not straight forward or easy or intuitive and takes several years to master.

Sure it can be done and it's very easy i have been doing it for a year now and am still new at linux, just know the basic commands but there are a lot of how to's on the internet just google whatever you want and someone out there has a how to on it. I currently run all those services plus more yet as late as yesterday i didnt know how to remove a symlink, so as long as you are ready to put in some time you will be suprised at what you can do with your box.

Hey Firewing, I don't see your virtual server howto, based on KVM or xen, or VMWARE?

I wouldn't use any of those until I have a product that actually has to run in different OS, then I'll do it. Since everything I need is in Linux, run everything in one Fedora box.

I have tried, but I am just having a hard time.

I am trying not to get discouraged, but it just seems as though thing Linux related are spread out all over the place. I wish there was a Linux noob guide to setting up a web server from start to finish with the best programs to use to fit most people in one place. I like Firewing1's guides, but I have gotten hung up on FTP.

There is just a lot to learn and I am probably just trying to learn too much too fast?..

Thanks guys.

Yes, FTP's a troublesome one. FTP and VPN are the only servers I've ever given up on trying to get running.
My web host uses preftpd for their FTP access, maybe it's worth a try.

Usually you have to set a ftp password in the server config file, the user account pass won't work.
