Receiving PMs
OK. It's nice to get a "Thank You" in a PM when you've helped someone but I don't see the point of sending someone a PM asking a question that really should be directed at the forum at large. There are many, many, many more knowledgeable people here who could probably answer questions better. It's also hard for an individual to give personal one-on-one support, especially in a volunteer forum like this.
This is not aimed at anyone in particular... maybe

I don't mind if it's a subject that I've helped with before, but the person needs more direct help. In fact, I've gotten a couple.
Then again, that's just me. haha

Hmmm.
Ok.
Via forum ... Free!
Via PM ... $100.00 per hour.
That should sort that.
EDIT: Unless it's me askin', of course. Then it should all be free anyway.

Most of my PM's are spammers offering Viagara and Cialis. Still wondering how they know....

I get a few, and I don't mind as long as it's not already answered by posts in the forums...

I vote for keeping these in the forums. I don't visit here quite as much as I used to and when I come in and see a private message from 1 week ago, I feel bad for the poster and wonder if they feel I am just being a jerk by not answering them.

Absolutely right; we've all got other things going on and may not be able to return a PM for quite awhile. In the meantime, most problems could have been solved by the Forum members, so it's not generally a good idea. I do suggest to some members to send emails or PM's to people who have had success with a specific hardware problem if it's an uncommon one. Also, there are those Forum issues that come up - can't log in, need a name change, etc. That's always acceptable PM material. And then too, there's the disagreements with how a situation was handled. I'd certainly rather discuss that in a PM than involve everyone in a policy dispute. Besides, it's also easier to ban the guy then and nobody's any the wiser! (Kidding - that never happens).

All kidding aside, I answer them all. Even if it's simply to suggest some various search terms or to direct them to someone more knowledgeable. And I try not to get too annoyed about a "failed search" because I've been there, and done that. And the forum search tool can be a wee bit frustrating. Seems like there's no middle ground. Unless you frame the search terms just right, you either find nothing ... or you get buried in three pages of stuff ... and only one or two posts will actually be useful.

Hello:
Some weeks, like last week, I received 6 pm's all from brand new members, 0 posts.
My response is usually the same.
Please post the question on the forum where it can be addressed by all members and where perhaps others can learn or solve their issues as well.
Once it's posted I will have a look and see if I can help.
Seve

That's your own fault, guys! If you weren't so knowledgeable and decent, you'd just be getting Viagara ads...
