IPW2200 WPA and ETH1

So - I managed to dig up the 'how-to' stuff available on getting this to work. From adding a startup script, to switching WPA_SUPPLICANT to using eth1 instead of wlan0, etc. I have the passkey entered, the network identified and all "seems" to be correct. As a matter of fact, I can ping my wireless card using my lan card (from the same machine) when they are both connected. But, when I unplug the lan, the wireless doesn't seem to take over. i.e. - although I seem to be connected, I can't actually use eth1 as the card of choice. Is there something I am missing? They are both active, and even when I de-activate eth0, eth1 still doesn't work. But I have to be connected if I can ping from eth0 ip to eth1 ip - right? Is this a settings issue or am I missing something simple? Any help would be appreciated.
