how to install openoffice from openoffice website?

www.openoffice.org.
Ok, I downloaded the 120mb archive.
I highlighted all the rpm files and installed them and I installed the menu rpm for desktop integration.
But I have no menus and if I type openoffice in a terminal window, all I get is a '>' symbol.
So where did they all go when it 'installed'?

I am running fc7 test2 and openoffice install using yum fails.

I found it in /opt
but I dont have any menu items.
How do I get them and how many should I have?
perhaps the desktop integration rpm must not work on FC7 test2

If you look on their site they have clear instructions how to install it.

Edit: It took me all of 2 seconds to find it again:

http://download.openoffice.org/2.1.0...ons.html#linux

I thought FC7 would come with OpenOffice 2.1 so why did you need to install from O.O.o? I can understand if you want it on FC6.

Hi Seve,

2.2.0? Where did that come from? I thought the latest was 2.1

OK. I just removed OpenOffice 2.0 from my FC6 install and installed 2.1 from OpenOffice.org according to their instructions. First I removed the RPM for KDE integration from the RPMs directory as I use Gnome. As the OP said, there were no entries in the Gnome menu for O.O.o, even after logging out and back in. In the subdirectory 'desktop-integration' there is an RPM for 'freedesktop-menus' I installed that, logged out and back in and voila! I had my menu entries back!

Edit: Be sure to add 'openoffice.org*' to the 'exclude=' line in /etc/yum.conf or the system will want to update it to the old version again

Edit2: Be in store for more surprises Previously you had a hidden directory in your /home called '.openoffice.org2.0' where all your settings were stored. Now you'll find another one called '.openoffice.org2' and I suppose your settings were not transferred over.

Oh, perhaps logging out would have helped. The menus did show up after package updater did a bunch of updates for OpenOffice.

Should I have used the freedesktop menu rpm?
I had installed the redhat menu rpm.
After the updates, I got the menu and tried rpm -Uvh flkjflkjflkjfetc....rpm for the menu items and it said it was already installed.

As strange as it seems, the FC7 version is newer than the version available for download on the OpenOffice.org site so all you did was update from 2.1 to 2.2 with the official Fedora version. You can see that on the 'About' dialogue picture you posted. That would also be the reason why the entries are now in the menu where they weren't with the 2.1 version you installed. It's all rather confusing

I wonder what would happen if FC6 users were to do this:

yum --enablerepo=development update openoffice.org

Could be fun

Ahaa! It's a release candidate and not a stable release!
