Windows free?
Personally, I've been Windows free since 1994 when I dumped DOS/Win 3.11 for OS/2 but there has been one Windows machine in the house the last few years. That XP machine turned into an FC6 machine for my eldest son and the FC5 machine he was using (much lower spec) reverted back to Win2k for one game, which hardly anyone plays. So today, I downloaded a customised version of Ubuntu from the Japanese Ubuntu site (It has more Japanese fonts and has an application to install Japanese versions of apps like Acroread, etc) and set it up for my youngest to resemble a Mac. His school uses eMacs and we now have an iMac in the house so it should be easier for him to use if he wants to.
If he doesn't use it I may install OS/2 on it (eComStation) or something else. Looks like my new experimental machine
But, we are now nearly 100% Windows free. Alas, the sister-in-law is still in the clutches of the evil empire

Well, Windows was never seriously used here, just for one or two games. My kids both have a PSP and they have a PS2 and a GameCube so the PC was mostly sitting idle. When the price drops they'll probably want a PS3 but even as kids they think it's too expensive right now

Well, I still have the wife factor counting so one windows is still alive. I keep telling myself that an accident will happen but nope... her voodoo is stronger than mine
One relief. My 5yr old daughter uses my FC6 (well ok... its for playing tempest and other arcade classics . I consider its a good tactic as long as she don't touch windows

I just had to put an XP partition on one of my laptops this weekend, the girlfriend apparently needs to watch korean soaps on PPlive. And since I can't get PPlive to run for love nor money under linux, an XP partition it is.

I have, in reality been winders free since about mid 2005. This was when all my business and personal stuff migrated from my XP box to my FC4 computer. From that time on the only time I booted into XP was to update and scan it. My wife still used it for real arcade and a few other store bought games she likes and she had her docs and personal stuff on it. She also had all her bookmarks set up in FF on that one. But she is an ADON at a nursing home (second down in rank) and has to work long and wierd hours and didnt really use the xp box for anything except the games. Well, I am on a kvm switch and my big computer is the one that stays up. My wife soon found it was easier to just use my computer to jump online to check her mail. Then she next got to the point where she broke down and tried OO.o (for over a year all I got was "well, I just KNOW word and it would take too long to learn linux crap blah blah blah...") and found out she could use that just as easily. I have managed to teach her basics such as the principal behind the root system and my root password. I set up her own file in /share (my /home) for her personal stuff. Rather than share FF I just gave her epiphany (which was the browswer she preferred, we did a taste test using all of them) and she uses that for her personal use. So all this culminated about last Oct when Ballmer shot his mouth off, I had enough of the winders garbage and I wanted to use that windows box for other things rather than just have it sit for months at a time turned off and gathering dust. So I showed my wife the various linux games that could replace what she liked and she soon got into them and even marvled at the selection linux actually offers. Then I asked as nicely as I could if I could ditch windows. I explained it from a Christian prespective that Microsoft was an abusive, immoral company and that I, in all good conscience, couldnt continue supporting their product. We agreed that even though we had paid for the product it really didnt see any use and we preformed a little cermony as I cut the XP install disc in half over the trash. We are now free and havent missed windows yet. Dont think we ever will.

Did you install that WinOS/2 virtual machine in OS/2? I think that would count as Windows!
Also, just curious but how many of you here are using keyboards with those silly Windows keys? Yeah, yeah, I know you can remap them under Linux, but just seeing them on the keyboard is bad enough. In my opinion, you're not completely Windows-free if you're not using a 101-key keyboard (or any other keyboard without the Windows keys). And no Microsoft mice either!

As Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction would say: OS/2's dead, baby. OS/2's dead.
I know it's tough for people who've used it before, but sometimes you just gotta accept that it's over and let it go. You don't want to end up like the Amiga people.

I'm Windows free aside from having to use a Windows machine to do my spanish. I really wish they'd port Rosetta Stone to linux. It may work in wine but I don't know how to get Java installed in wine.

Windows free since around December '05. I was none too keen on shelling out for XP to replace Win Me and to upgrade my computer to run it, one of our computer mags had FC4 ( CD version ) on its cover DVD. Wondering what to expect I burned the CDs, installed - dual boot initially - and still grinning like a hyena on illegal substances! As stable as Balmer isn't, no security anxieties ( unless you do something really dumb ) and friendly help on hand if you do hit problems. Tux rules, OK!
