FC6 installation - checking dependencies

Hi, I am brand new to Linux and this is my first post to this forum. I have been with Windows for years and thought it's time to dip into the Linux world (sorry Bill - please dont revoke my MCSE!) anyway, I had a look around and thought Fedora Core 6 looked like a good place to start my journey of Linux discovery.

I have a Shuttle SN25P, specs are;

AMD Athlon64 X2 4200
NVIDIA nForce4 MCP
1GB RAM
HDD0 - 300GB HDD - Windows Vista Ultimate
HDD1 - 200GB HDD - Blank, this is where I want Fedora
NVIDIA 7800GT 256MB PCIe
NEC X16 DVDRW
Samsung 20.1" Widescreen TFT Head1
Sony 17" TFT Head2

I am trying to install Fedora Core 6 - 64bit

My problem is that I start going through the install fine; until it gets to the software selection, I take the defaults and it comes up "checking dependencies in packages selected for installation" and gets about 99% through the progress bar and then just sits there. Tried it about 10 times now and gets to the same point every time. I have checked all the media and it states it is fine, I have downloaded the ISO's again and made another set of discs.

And as I am writing this I am trying the install again; this time I have got a new error message when about 15% through the progress bar stating "an error occurred unmounting the CD. Please make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2 and then click OK to retry" Clicking OK just brings that error up again.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appeciated

Unless you have a really good reason for 64bit (heavey number crunching etc) I would switch to 32bit. On most apps you will not see any speed difference and 32bit is a more traveled road. There are still a lot of things (apps and hardware) that are not well supported in 64bit.

Welcome and Good Luck

Got it all working in the end! Impressed so far.......

I have two SATA hard disks; one with Windows Vista Ultimate and the other with Fedora Core 6 64bit. Using MBR and GRUB on the Linux disk for O/S selection; works a treat!
