Two hopefully simple problems - An RT2500 card and a weird DVD-drive problem.

So I finally got around to getting myself a new fileserver/media box.. after some expected frustrations with the RT2500 wireless card I got it working... until I reboot. Then there's this wlan0.bak card with the correct settings and the card now called wlan0 has a few of the settings missing. Any idea how to stop this?

The second problem is strange - to me, at least. The DVD drive simply doesn't work under X. I can mount it fine in a terminal, and it auto-mounts fine on insertion but the CD/DVD drive icon in computer doesn't work under any circumstance and often even disappears. The automount opens up a window to the /media/cdrom directory instead of handling it as a drive like it normally would - this makes it a big problem when I want to watch DVDs.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted

Alrighty... fresh morning; fresh perspective.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the RT2500 card.. now it's not making a copy, but it's not retaining the correct settings. If I want it to get an IP I have to:

Quote:
iwconfig wlan0 rate auto
iwconfig wlan0 key ABCDEABCDE restricted
iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
and then I can dhclient myself a nice IP address. (abcdeabcde isn't my key.. just a replacement)
iwconfig wlan0 commit gives me an error, and I've made sure that the ifcfg-wlan0 file matches the correct settings - it does. Any further ideas?

On the DVD problem, the only new light I can shed on it is that I get the following error if I don't have a disc in the drive when I boot.

Quote:
Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode: [ OK ]
Mounting local filesystems: [FAILED]
Also I can't right click on the drive icon in Computer and eject it. I receive the error "Unable to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive.". That's right... when I try to eject it. Weird.

I can do eject /dev/hdc fine though.

Any thoughts?

Added the lines
Quote:
KEY="ABCDEABCDE"
SECURITYMODE=restricted
to the ifcfg-wlan0 file and now the network card's OK on boot. I'd disregarded this since system-config-network seemed to retain the key and the channel was also changing.. I assume now that the channel was reset because the nic failed to get an IP.

So that's half the problem solved.. now what's with this silly DVD drive?

The DVD drive is a hardware issue

I just popped in the Pioneer drive from my old fileserver (the one this new box will replace) and there's no such problem.

The DVD±RW model's an ASUS DRW-1612BL

Any ideas? I haven't heard of a DVD drive being incompatible with linux... Especially since it's the drive I installed FC6 on.
