Unless there is a really good reason (like web developement) stay as far away from ie as possible. IE has so many holes it is begging for trouble. Firefox should have been installed with FC6. There is also seamonkey(used to be mozilla), opera and probably a dozen others I am forgetting.

Good Luck

I am agreeing with lazlow, Internet Explorer under linux shouldn't be used. At least, less as possible. The reason lazlow evocated are the mains ones but also because it have lot of problems with it's flash plugin by example. Loading a page with a test flash movie we made, under windows i.e 6 work well, under linux i.e 6 do not work properly and I.E simply crashed. It could also be flash pluggin problem but however you get the point. I beleive that if your developping a website compatible with I.E, the best options would be to consider a Virtual Machine or simply a dual boot machine with windows? I beleive VM Server is free to use also.

Good luck,

I have no idea why someone want to use Internet Explorer in Linux when clearly there are better alternatives.

Hey, the man asks for help with installing IE, not for your opinion. I prefer Firefox too, but everyone can choose for himself.

Firefox consumes times more RAM and it's quite slow. A page with javascript and flash animation takes 80% of my CPU in Firefox. The same page takes 20% of the CPU in IE.

BTW I'm web developer and I'm interested in IE for linux. Can you tell me where to download it. I tried netscape (the one with IE engine), but it crashes when certain pages are opened and it closes automatically if you surf too long.

To test website designs or access certain sites without rebooting or dealing with VM's.
I have never had a problem getting IEs 4 Linux to install and run, but I still agree that VM is the way to go.

For my tuppence worth, I want IE for compatability reasons, I get an error when trying to install eFax messenger thru wine that I need IE 5 or higher, and apparently once i have it eFax should work, making me pop a happy man!

Other than that I stay WELL away... Though its interesting to hear that Firefox uses more ram/CPU... Is mozilla so bad? Is it worth changing? I wonders...

Cheers, Rohan

Damn, I tried that IE for linux link, but it failed... I got this in the terminal:
All right! Let's start the installations...

Downloading everything we need
DCOM98.EXE
--19:40:27-- http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...a51/DCOM98.EXE
Resolving download.microsoft.com... 1.0.0.0
Connecting to download.microsoft.com|1.0.0.0|:80... failed: Network is unreachable.
mfc40.cab
--19:40:30-- http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vc/mfc40.cab
Resolving activex.microsoft.com... 1.0.0.0
Connecting to activex.microsoft.com|1.0.0.0|:80... failed: Network is unreachable.
and so it continued through all the packages, I am online, and completed an installation only a min or so ago, so its not that... Help please!

Thanks, Rohan

I would guess that this is a network issue and not the software. I just installed it in about 5 minutes and it worked fine.

Do you have wine and cabextract installed?

Try pinging the addresses that it declared unreachable.

Try it again. Maybe the servers were down.

I have wine and cabextract installed, erm I've forgotten how to ping?! Lol, I've done, but it's got lost in the mist of remembering other commands...

Thanks, Rohan

thanks for the help, but I got 'unknown host' errors for everything I tried...

[chadwick@localhost ~]$ ping http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...a51/DCOM98.EXE
ping: unknown host http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...a51/DCOM98.EXE
[chadwick@localhost ~]$ ping http://www.google.com
ping: unknown host http://www.google.com

Am I being a timym and missing something with the 'ping' command? or is my terminal being crap?!

Cheers, Rohan

Quick and easy way via

http://www.tatanka.com.br/

ies4linux

assuming you have a Microsoft license for some valid Windows O/S for your box anyway.

Just drop the http:// and life should get better.

Aha! Thankyou, much better, now I know the internets not broken - Google works!

However, Download.micrsoft.com is still 'unknown host'...

Why is it that every time someone points me in the direction of a '5 min to install, nothing easier' style fix, it doesn't bloody work for me?! GRR! If I wasn't enjoying 'geeking out' with linux I woulda run back to windows/macos with my tail betwixt my legs... :S

Thanks again, Rohan
