Why do updates take so long coming?

I know Wibble is for non Linux talk but this really is a wibble!

Sometimes on my journeys around the web I notice updates to proggies included in Fedora that haven't made it to the repos yet and sometimes it takes well over a week or more for them to do so. As an example, I was running Pan 0.122 and I checked in at the Pan website and the version was up to 0.124. A few days later that finally made it into the repos. A whole version had been skipped before we got an update. Also, an update to the gtk-murrine-engine was posted on gnome-look.org (version 0.51) on March 1st and within hours (or less) Ubuntu had a 'deb' I'm sitting here waiting like an idiot for it still to hit extras. If I look through my menu I could probably find more examples, I know many noobs are crying out for Firefox 2 (ain't gonna happen though!)

Well, my guess is that there are only that many repo maintainers building that many new packages and either they miss some updates/ don't see reason to build new package because changes are minimal or the one who usually is responsible building that type of packages isn't available.

It's a matter of volume and repeats.
Also, many mirrors serve a lot of other distros and a lot of other stuff.
And in the case of my local mirror, they use refugees from the primate research center for staff on the weekends.

Hang in there, on March 9th all will take off like a rocket.
In fact many may forget computing for a week and take up jogging.

There are a tons of packages to check for compatibilies, reliability. May be you can help Fedora ppl doing package check and/or modifications.

If I knew how to do it I would have done it for myself. But, having the intelligence of a retarded amoeba high on crack I don't see how I could.
