I've followed the intructions in the Wiki, but still can't get Java plugin for firefox 32-bit to work.
No matter what I do, the plugin does not install, or so it seems.
Any help wil be appreciated .

If your running the 64-bit firefox, you'll have to uninstall it, and then use the 32-bit version to get java working. They don't tell you outright to use 32-bit firefox on the java website, and you can't use the 32-bit java with the 64-bit firefox

Lightbulb 64-bit Java for 64-bit Firefox

First, you'll probably be glad if you install the Firefox-32 package as root:
Code:
yum install firefox-32
That way, you can launch the "/usr/bin/firefox-32" script from the command line or create a GNOME Desktop launcher and it will launch the 32-bit version instead of the default 64-bit.
Next, it IS possible to get Java working under 64-bit but you have to use a (I think) third-party, older 1.42 version of Java from BlackDown.org, per these instructions:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux-am...java-blackdown

Lightbulb 64-bit Java for 64-bit Firefox (Part 2)

More information is available at http://fedora64.org/desktop-64-posts/java-x86_64
But I didn't do nearly so much as that (all I cared about was the JRE plugin for Firefox 64-bit).

Uhhh... sorry, I don't understand either one of your questions.

If you're asking, can you get java to work under both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox, the answer is yes. (How easy is it? It's not agonizing at least.)

For the 32-bit Firefox, I'm using the JRE from the JDK 1.6.0 package.

For the 64-bit Firefox, I'm using the Blackdown 1.4.2 Java version.

Agree
My bottom line question is:
Have you tried instead Blackdown version for 64-bit Firefox , to use JRE Standard Edition HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.5.0_10-b03, mixed mode) beside 32-bit JRE ?

Have a look at my Wiki, www.johnson.homelinux.net, where I cover installing Java for Fedora Core 6. I feel that the biggest tripping point is WHERE you link the java plugin to. I have Firefox 2 installed in /opt/firefox so I link to /opt/firefox/plugins. If you're trying to get it working for Firefox 1.5.x.x you need to link to /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.10/plugins or /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7/plugins, etc. You also need to restart Firefox afterwards. No, I haven't. I wasn't even aware of that. Thanks. I'll go try that, if I can find it.

M8 ?? Does that mean mate? You're welcome. The wiki is just something I play around with. It's as much for personal notes as it is to help anyone who's interested.

I forgot to mention I needed this:
Code:
yum install libXp
Without this, blackdown 1.42 would always crash with a lengthy error message. And, I could only see this error message in the console, and then only if I did this for example:
Code:
firefox http://www.java.com/
Then I'd go to the verify option, it would dutifully crash, and spit out some awful error message. It complains about soundwrapper first, which was throwing me off, then I finally parsed it well enough to figure out it needed libXp.so.6 which is easily rectified with the yum command above.
