Selection and highlight

Hi,
I am using a fresh Core 6 install (mostly server type installation, including X11, no desktop). I am accessing it from Win2K, using Putty or Exceed (xterm started from Putty with X11 forwarding). Problem is that, no matter where I am doing a selection (mouse, CTRL-A, whatever), in either Putty terminal or xterm (via Exceed), the selected text is highlighted and, as soon as I release the mouse/key, the highlight dissappears. This makes difficult to use any editor (like Nedit) on Fedora, as cutting (for example) of a selected text will not work.
Any ideas on why this behaviour?
Thanx.
