My CD burner is gone

Hi!

Today when I was about to start burning a CD with K3b I my CD burner was gone. I haven't actually used it too much since I installed FC6 a couple of months ago, but I think it has been working the whole time. Yesterday I got a couple of messages telling me that I had inserted an audio CD and asking me what to do with that, even though my CD drive was empty. Today I cant find it anywhere. There is no /dev/cdrom, or anything else that could be a CD drive, and in kSysInfo it says "No information available about CD-ROM info".

I have tried to google this, and search this forum, but I haven't found anything usable.

My system is a Dell Latitude 110L laptop with FC6 on it.

Edit: After writing this post I checked the BIOS, and found that the Modular Device Bay-field was empty. I believe this to be the CD rom, and so the problem may not be OS related after all. The problem with CD drives disappearing is a known problem with this computer, at least in my school, so I guess I'll just have to talk to PC support when I get back to school on monday.

Any help is still welcome, though, if anyone knows how to fix it

Can't help with the disappearing CD drive Delphi, my Dell Latitude ( Win98 vintage! ) is well behaved in that respect, but there is a thread started by Xen ( General Support>Mysterious CD-ROM disc ) which sounds very similar to the other problem you mention. No one has responded yet, but it might be worth watching that thread. Hope someone can help you both.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the CD burner is back. I upgraded my BIOS from A4 to A8, and that brought it back again.

And now it's gone again Or rather it is there, I can see it in /dev, and I can see the empty cd I inserted, but both K3b and xcdroast claim they cannot find any CD burners on my system. Which leasves me back at my original question, what to do now?
