You must see a button as well about accepting the sane license. If you click that, it will search for connected scan devices.

Paul, My officejet G55 is on and connected via parallel port. The sane website on the G55 is confusing. At the top of the page under Bus Type it says USB, in the table under hpaio backend - interface it lists parport(ECP), USB and JetDirect. I assumed from this that I could use the parallel port. I'm using the parallel port because when I had Fedora Core 3 I couldn't configure the G55 in USB. I haven't tried to configure USB since I installed Fedora Core 5. Thanks again, Llarry

Larry, the parallel port is a bit obsolete right now. Try to connect your OfficeJet via usb, normally your device will be automatically recognized. HP gear works usually very well with Linux. I bought a DeskJet 6940 some months go, it was just a question to plug it into a usb port and the basic functionality was there, meaning I could print. For more advanced stuff you need to tweak some things. Same story for my last HP printer that worked for 10 long years, a LaserJet 5L, it just worked with Linux (and hey, via the parallel port!). So keep trying!

Paul, thanks for your reply. When I select the 3rd option-xsane device dialog-all I see is the license agreement, nothing else, no buttons to push. Although I think I installed xsane, I'm not sure. I checked my liist of services and there I see hplip but no xsane. How do I check to see if xsane is installed? Should I download xsane again? Thanks, Larry

Hi, in your post #10 you said you installed xsane successfully, so I guess that is the case. You can type in a terminal, as su -, "yum info xsane" and see if the output bears the word "installed" somewhere. But this starts to become a rather weird story. Are you able to print with your OfficeJet?

Larry, I just searched on Google for "HP Officejet G55 scanning linux" and that gave some links back that said "can't scan via parallel port on Ubuntu (Windows works well)" and "Problems on SuSe with this device". Seems to be a bit old, your G55, perhaps that is causing these troubles.
Perhaps the following link is of interest:

Paul, Im able to print just fine with my G55. With yum info xsane it said installed. Also I check /usr/share/sane/xsane/doc/ and all xsane inputs all xsane inputs appear to be present. It seems to me that installing xsane should result in a GUI window that I could use to command a scan and xsane should show up in the services listing even with no scanner hooked up or turned on. The copy function works fine on the G55 so the lamp and scanning mechanism is working. But, maybe the key to all this is the usb connection. I'll give it a go. Thanks again, Larry

Strange. I scan with an Epson 3200 and all I have to do is installing xsane, open up Gimp and say Acquire, and then I get all the scan windows/options as needed, like prescan and adapt levels, etc. Nothing to configure. Hope your usb connection works better...

Paul, I hooked up my G55 via usb and went through Printer Configuration which recognized the G55 usb connection. But, when I tried to print a test page it didn't print and I got the following error messages (1) Adding start banner page 'none' to job 1069,(2)Adding end banner page 'none' to job 1069, (3) Job 1069 queued on 'HPG55' by 'root', (4) Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 2430) for job 1069, (5) Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip (PID 2431 for job 1069, and (6) Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb (PID 2432) for job 1069. Also, I opened Gimp then Acquire then Scan device I got the sane lincensing agreement. When I clicked approve I got a window saying no devices available.
So, how can I get my G55 to print with the usb hookup? And, in the Printer Configuration setup the hpijs driver is available but not hplip, should hplip be availble and be chosen? Thanks again, Larry

Larry, I am very sorry but I must give up here. Can't make anything out of those messages except concluding you have apparently a serious problem with your G55 and Fedora. Some hardware does not work with Fedora, period. Try another distro perhaps? Or try go get it work in a virtual machine? Don't have other ideas here, sorry...

I discovered in the cups website faqs that the hpG55 has a known problem trying to print using the /dev/usb/lpo backend. They say 'print through the CUPSptal backend'. Further, they say 'configure the device ptal - init -setup', 'Restart the cups daeman, then killall -HUP'. My question is, how do I implement the CUPSptal backend? Now, when I use the Fedora Core 5 Printer Configuration tool it automatically scans for the computer and comes up with HPG55/usb/lpo. Can I use the Custom Device option? Thanks, Larry

Hi Larry,
you arrived at a point where you just must try *everything* to get that beast working, so try Custom Device and see what happens...

Hi All, The bottom line appears that I need the 'ptal' commands in my Fedora Core 5 in order to print & scan with my HP G55 via usb. I tried downloading ptal using # yum install ptal and it goes through all the steps and then says 'no match found for the ptal command'. So, how do I install ptal? Thanks, Larry
