Fresh install of FC6
The process of updating seems to have hosed the default GConf settings.
IE create a new user - he has no default background picture, only a single panel with nothing on it, no themes, some of the applications verify with rpm but do not work (IE control center crashes if you try to set your preferred applications), etc.
What schemas do I need to reload to get things right?
I think what happened is some of the updates dependended upon the GConf2 update (or possibly something related) but did not explicitly state it as a PreRequires, so they were installed with their %post scripts running before the GConf update was.
Anyway, short of the hassle of a clean install (and then hoping it doesn't repeat), what is the proper way to deal with this?
I must confess - I'm a little bit embarrassed - I've hassled Windows users about the delicacy of the registry for eons - it seems the gnome registry (GConf) is just as bad when it gets screwed.
What's really fun - stick in a USB memory stick. It won't mount, but the desktop thinks a blank CD is available for writing. It's screwed. But the packages are fine - it's the GConf database.
