Dual boot fails to install linux

After updating XP on my dual-boot system(FC5) and then being unable to get past the grub> prompt I reinstalled grub via "linux rescue" from my Installation DVD as Jongi recommended last month which enabled me to boot to XP and I was happy.

Only now do I realize that I cannot boot to Linux. Just this, all without the colorful screen:

Booting 'Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.2054_FC5)'
root (hd0,2)
Filesystem type unknown patition type 0x8e
Kernal /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 no root = /dev/FedoraVG/rootLV rhgb quiet
Error 17. Cannot mount selected partition

Anyone have a suggestion? Can I expect this behavior on all XP undates? Thanks in advance.

could be because ur hd numbers were entered wrongly in grub.

http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/gnu/gru...oc.html#TOC108

just go into grub shell and type
root (hd
then press tab...should auto complete with the drive
then a double tab will list all partitions and their type...
find out if ur partition is hd0,2 or hd1,2 and replace in grub prompt.
then u should be able to boot into linux

I am not clear about how to go into the grub shell. I doesn't work from the screen I show above. In fact typing anything there just gets me back to the screen from which I can opt for Fedora or XP. Can I use the Installation CD somehow?

I do know this from Partition Magic: the second partion of my only HD is linux ext 3 ( the swap space I gather) and the third is Type 8E (the linux partition). Thanks for your interest.

savallone when u get to the screen where u are asked to make a choice between Xp/Fedora there highlight FC and then press e.
then choose the line that says root (... and press e again.
now change that line to root (hd0, "tab" this should show u the partitions that are present on that particular dixk(hd0) and also the file system types. This would help u to find out if the partition mentioned in ur conf(2) is correct. It should be the one where u installed linux
