Exclamation Regular user can't mount/unmount floppy drive w/ FC6 & KDE

I have just put a clean install of "FC6 i686 on my wife's computer. Overall, she is very happy with the entire thing, but we cannot seem to find a way to allow her to use a floppy disk as a normal user.

On FC4 x86_64 (her old OS) I as able to put a link on her desktop that she could use to mount and unmount the floppy from, but it isn't working on FC6.

I tried to create custom application launchers to mount/unmount the drive and even included her user name in the sudo user files, but these are not working either (even though it works good from a command prompt). Since she will not use a command prompt (and that is a GOOD thing, believe me!), this is not an option.

Any pointers on this would be very much appreciated. She uses the floppy for business photos, so this is kind of urgent.

put the following line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0

and make the dir /mnt/floppy by doing

mkdir /mnt/floppy

now she should be able to do "mount /mnt/floppy" as a normal user and have access to the disk; it'll show up in the directory /mnt/floppy). (You may need a different device then /dev/fd0, whatever applies for your hardware).

Thumbs up

Dude, you ROCK!

I don't remember having to do that for FC4, but it worked like a charm.

I can't thank you enough.
