5.1 surround sound???

hallo,
how do i get my 5.1 sound working? with alsa drivers? which plugin do i need? i've allready installed the alsa mixer, but i cant get sound from my sub and other than my front speakers working.

there is an option surround51 for PCM output but how do i use that? and how do i know if ive got that? i use xmms if i go to configure outputplugin cant i then just use that surround51 option? but how?
