make r128 to work with dri - how hard it could be?

I attend to use my dell c600 laptop for some time and I would really like to use aiglx as on my desktop pc.
I searched for ways to make my old ati rage mobillity M3 work with dri, but, as mentioned in the Fedora Project Wiki, I could'nt.
I don't think that the new drivers will become compatible with such an old card, so I am searching for another solution.
And as the thread says, here is my question:
The Fedora Wiki writes for r128 "ATI: Rage 128. Looks like driver locking issue.". Is this a very complicated issue or one can overcome it with some work on the driver?
And if it is not that impossible, where should I start?
