Deleted old kernel and kernel-headers, and now the X-server won't start

Hey,

I installed yumex the other, and yesterday I found otu I could remove the old kernel with it. It has always irritated me that the old kernel shows up in GRUB, so as the newbie I am, I removed the old kernel and the kernel-headers with the same name. BIG mistake! Now Fedora cant open the X-server.. I've tried both 'yum install kernel-headers', 'yum update', and 'yum install kernel', but nothing has worked.

Is there anyway besides reinstalling Fedora, that can fix this? And what excactly did I do when I removed the old kernel and kernel-headers?

OS: Fedora Core 6
Old kernel: 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6
New kernel: 2.6.18-1.2869.fc6
Old kernel-headers: 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6

Don't be irritated by that, it is a functional thing. Because when you do some updates to your current kernel that break things, you can always boot from that older kernel. If you don't want to see the older kernel(s) at bootup, edit /etc/grub.conf and out-comment (#) the lines from those older ones.

Don't know how to repair your system at this point...

Paul.

I presume you can log in in text mode? If so, try ' startx ' ( ignoring quotes ). I had to use this to get X-server working again after running the updates and re-booting on my laptop FC6 install. Hope this helps.

Hello:
You could try
yum groupinstall "X Window System"

you may have removed something when you removed your kernel and kernel-headers
and this may re-install whatever it is you are missing?

It almost worked. I can now get a graphical interface, but it looks like this: http://www.y-windows.org/images/y-screenshot.png

Got more ideas? It would be nice not having to reinstall..

Thanks,
Katoom

hehehe yeah so now do yum groupinstall "gnome desktop environment"

most likely you removed something other than the kernel source and it also removed its dependancies which eventually lead to gnome and or X being removed

well, judging to that screenshot, X is definitely running! It's BlackBox or one of the variations of that what you see, and you'll want Gnome or KDE I suppose. Try Hiberphoptik's suggestion.
