Long boot up time
Hello,
New user here. Just migrated from Windows.
Fedora seems to take a very long time to boot up. Is there a way to make boot time go faster?
Also, is there a way to, instead of shutting down, to hibernate like in Windows?
Thanks.

Try disable some services you do not need like web server daemon, ftp and etc.

My Service List
I'm running Fedora Core 1 on a laptop and these are the services I need. All the rest have been closed down which means there are less security holes and the machine boots faster.
apmd
autofs
cups
keytable
network
netfs
PCMCIA
syslog
Try disabling the services one at a time and make sure nothing breaks.

Also, i know the thing that took the longest when i booted was looking for drives that weren there (drives e-g) Thats what took forever. I dont know exactly how to disable that, but since i only reboot once in a while it doesnt bother me. If anyone knows how, id like to know how to disable it from looking for the drives taht dont exist every time i boot.

Prometheus, if you want to disable searching for drives, hde-g, add hde=none to the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf.

For me Fedora seens to boot as fast or faster than Windows XP. The system services take a while to start, but it's not too bad. I especially like it that once my desktop appears it's ready to use and the hard drive isn't clicking like mad like Windows is at every login.

Here's a couple of things to do to speed up booting:
Open redhat-config-services and disable:
kudzu (if you don't do much hardware switching)
sendmail (unless you really need to be running it)
And you should look trough the running services and remove the things you are sure you don't need, if you don't know, ask here or just leave it. Kudzu and sendmail are often the ones slowing things down.
That beeing said, linux boots a little slower than windows, but then again, linux is more stable and a better operating system. Try speeding it up, but I don't think it will ever be as fast as a fast windows boot.

I know my system takes a little while to boot up, because it always trys to open eth0 (network card) since there's nothing attached to it.
I'm just too lazy to turn the service off. I did turn a lot of other services off though and its bootup time did decrease.
