Nvidia GEForce FX 5200 Black screen with X or Blue Screen and nothin
I know lots of people have had this problem and I have tried every solution I can find.
I am running FC3, and want to move to FC6.. I couldn't get FC5 to install for the same reasons.
I am booting from the DVD (yes have tried the CD's also)
I get to the install screen and
> linux
BLACK Screen with X
>linx text
BLUS screen with nothing...
All of these also lead to black screen
linux vesa
linux vga=773
linux noacpi acpi=off
linux mode=vesa resolution=1024x768
HELP! ? Any suggestions...

thanks seve, but no joy... same big old black screen with the default X
Is there any "logical" way to find out what is going on? I checked the /tmp/ramfs/X.log file and don't see any errors.... well not that look like errors to me

Hello:
Sorry, I just noticed that you already tried that.
Is there a newer BIOS for your motherboard ?
Do you have you BIOS set to setup or optimized defaults?

np... BIOS is pretty much factory defaults... I don't really remember changing anything, but I have had it for a while.
I actually notice the optimized defaults option today while I was looking around. I tried using an old PCI ATI adapter and went in to the bios to use PCI before AGP..
I will check for bios updates now... Thanks for the idea. I'll post the result.

You say that on graphical install it's coming up with a black screen and an X. That means that the X server was successfully started. Sometimes, though, it can takes ages for something to come up so that installation can commence, so I'd give it something like 10 minutes before giving up.

I had similar problems, please see my story at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...ighlight=emink
Try this at boot prompt (Watch "noapic" not 'noacpi')
> linux noapic acpi=off vga=773

Tried the suggestion
> linux noapic acpi=off vga=773
No Joy. Left it for over 30 minutes waiting for something, anything, to happen.
ABIT go through some 3rd part for BIOS and they want 50 bucks to upgrade. Does anyone know how I can be sure that this will fix my problem?
Am I to be stuck in FC3 land forever?!

I have the same video card and have no problems with it. I may be way off base here, but I wonder if there is an option in the board's bios to init PCI or AGP first, and wonder if that may be the problem. if the board is set to look for PCI first and doesn't find a PCI card it just hangs? Just a thought.

Hang in there. It will be solved.
This might make no sense, but
1. Clear CMOS on the motherboard.
2. Turn off any overclocking
3. >linux acpi=off
See if this makes any difference. I understand the feeling, but look at what and how much you will be learning. Good luck.

I really appreciate all the help....
Cleared CMOS, no overclocking was enabled but no luck...
Emink, what type of motherboard do you have?
Also, tried the PCI/AGP settings.. still no luck...

Frusconi,
I have eVGA NF51 motherboard which I guess worst than what you got.
Ok, how about ">linux acpi=off skipddc"

getting close....
I tried > linux acpi=pff skipddc and no different, but then just for grins I added noprobe and it got me to the first screen....
Now before I move ahead what are the implications? I am doing an upgrade, will the noprobe stop things from upgraded? What is the skipddc option?
