upgrading fedora core kernel 2.6.15-1.2054 to 2.6.16.13-4

my os is fedora core 5.
my kernel is:

$ uname -r
2.6.15-1.2054_FC5

I would like to install a newer kernel.
I have got the following rpm from the SuSe 10.1 DVD:

kernel-default-2.6.16.13-4.i586.rpm

Is it possible to install that kernel on fedora core 5?

Any help with this matter would be apreciated.

Hello:
Do you have an internet connection?
If so download a newer kernel & kernel-devel from here :
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...pdates/5/i386/

I would not try and install that kernel from Suse as each distro has certain patches etc. that they apply to the base kernel and include it their released distro kernels.
Also the arch is likely different than what you have installed.
i586 vs i686
You will have nothing but problems.

Edit:
Perhaps Leigh said it much better

How would I be able to upgrade my kernel then ?
I have a dialup so downloading 50 MB takes to long and to expensive
I was hoping that I could use a kernel from another Linux distrobution

Hello:
If you only have dial up then it is an issue speed wise.
Do you have access somewhere to a faster download, perhaps a friend / business etc.?
If so, download the kernel and kernel-devel and save them to a disc and transfer them to your FC in a separate folder with only the 2 rpm's then in that folder as root do a rpm -ivh *.rpm

The kernel is ~15M and kernel-devel is ~4.4M

50MB is not undoable on dial up. But, if you just cant swing this then my suggestion would be either run what you brung (americanism for stay with your current kernel) or make your way to your local book store and buy the latest linux pro mag and use whatever distro of the month they are offering. Or send away to Fedora of a copy of the install CD set for FC6.

Hey Seve

Those files:
kernel
kernel-devel

From which website am i able to download those from, the main reason for upgrading my kernel is so that i can install my nvidia drivers.
There seems to be a problem with my kernel and binary drivers.
I also need the kernel sources for the new kernel

Hello:
You will / should only need the kernel and the matching kernel-devel as well as xorg-x11-server-sdk and pkgconfig
you should not need the kernel source to install the binary drivers from nVidia. You can check / ask about the requirements here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490
You can get the kernel and kernel-devel from here or or other mirrors if you do a little searching.
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...pdates/5/i386/

To check to see if you have some of the packages installed:
rpm -aq | grep packagename
