scsi tape drive

Hi all and Merry Christmas. I usually can find answers to problems here in the forum or google and figure it all out, but this one has got me stumped.

I got an old archive python scsi tape drive hooked to an adaptec 2940u/ua pci scsi card. fc6 sees it no problem. I can use it using the mt commands no problem. The problem is the couple of gui apps I've tried do not see it. I would like to at least figure out why kdat always reports there is no tape in the drive. I'm using kdat under gnome and have it set to /dev/st0, which is where the tape drive is. dmesg shows that the scsi mod is loaded. The only thing I can figure right now is that I'm missing something that needs to be installed.

If anyone has any insight on this I'd appreciate it.
