Configure D Link 704 Router
Following question could be posted at Instalation Help, Harware, or Networking, as it might fall across all three of them. mia culpa!
Need Help Configuring D Link DL-704 router (D1-704?)
Router has WAN port and serial port on back side. USR external modem is connected to serial port.
Router has 4 Ethernet ports on front. 1st port is connected to eth1 port on my computer. eth1 is active.
Computer is running fresh FC5 installation.
Front of D Link:
4 Ethernet ports
reset button 2 rows of indicator lights:
top row - M2(blinks) - Line/Act 1(lit),2,3,4
Bottom row - M1(not lit) - 10/100 1(lit),2,3,4
FC 5 does not see D Link router as new hardware to install.
I brought up Firefox, but get message that it can't find server.
I could blow the installation and reinstall w/D Link connected to Ethernet port?
I am thinking That I need to type in url for the D Link in the browser.

FC5 does not need to know that your router is there, assuming that it is connected with DHCP(in your case most likely as eth1 is active) . To get your PC to get WAN(internet) access you need to configure your router, typing the address into your web browser i.e: 192.168.1.1 consult the manual for the routers specific address.

I typed in an address, and got the D configuration page to come up in the browser.
The page has on it:
D-Link cable/DSL Residential Gateway
D-Link
DI-704
Web Configuration
At the bottom is:
System Password _______ Log in
I entered my FC5 user Password, root Password, Dialup Password, and a few others. Just grasping at straws. Got incorrect Password at each attempt. I pushed the reset button on the front of the unit, Got the same results.
I am wondering If I have the correct hardware to act as router, and for access to the internet via my dialup connection.
I don't have a manual for the D-Link.
At this point I think I need to post to Networking, but don,t want to be guilty of cross posting. What to do w/o getting in trouble?

If its a second user router, you may need the old users password. Otherwise the default is no username and password "admin". Please see http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=63 for config instructions.

Hi, I access my d-link router as follows:
type 192.168.0.1 in a browser and give as user name "admin" and as password "", that means an empty or no password. btw: 192.168.1.1 is my separate d-link adsl modem.

Reply to Zerolixis, Bob and Paul M.
This is a 2nd hand D Link. I finally tried "admin" and got in. I got to the Config page by entering 192.168.0.1 in my browser. I finally found the manual, downloaded and printed it. Will study it now.
Thanks

Got the D Link 704 I configured. Sort of.
Running Fedora Core 5. D Link connected to eth1 via ethernet cable, and USR external 56K modem connected to D Link serial port.
I can ping the D Link. I can Open its config page from my browser. I can activate and deactivate it the modem from the D Link config page, and the config page reports that I have a connection at 26K. I can bring up Firefox or Thunderbird while the modem is not activated, and the modem activates and dials out, but I get a message that the google server can't be found, or that the mail server cant be found. I can't ping them either. I can connect to them from another computer here, so they are both up.

Got all the FC5 network configuration, D Link, and MODEM issues resolved.
I used Knoppix and got out to the web. Ithen compared settings.
I was still not able to get on the web until I looked at the DNS settings in FC5.
Primary DNS was 192.168.0.3 (same address as eth1). I changed it to 192.168.0.1(the address for the D Link) Got out on the web from FC5 after that.
Thanks for all the help.

Ha Borgward, good that it works now. Perhaps some of your troubles could have been avoided when I had said earlier: reset the router to it's factory settings (but I forgot that..). There's a little hole on the back of the device for that, just put the top of a pencil in it for a couple of seconds.
Cheers, Paul.

I found the reset hole after finding a Manual to download for the D Link. That took some surfing to find it at http://support.dlink.com/products/vi...uctid=DI%2D704
Thanks
