Angry Help needed regarding installation of Fedora 5

Hello All,

First of all thanx and cheers to all the members who are doing a lot in their best possible way to solve each and everybody's problem.

I'm getting screwed up with a strange problem while installing fedora 5 on my PC.
Below is the configuration of my PC:
Hp Pavilion a1322in Media Center Desktop
Intel Pentium D Processor 820
2.8GHz, 256MB RAM(which i made it to 768MB by adding another 512MB),
160GB SATA drive(model no. ST3160812AS),
Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (graphics card),
HP vs17x monitor (LCD)
USB, Firewire cards etc.

Problem:

When i booted from the DVD drive it loaded some drivers for USB, firewire, SATA (sata_sil driver), for the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 and once the Anaconda starts the screen shows some weird graphics with the cursor also not properly visible. Because of this i'm not able to proceed with the installation of Fedora 5.
I tried with the options shown by F2 + which i found from the installation help forums of this website.
From the past 1 week i've tried with all the different drivers of SATA which is shown by the option linux noprobe.
But till now i've not been to successful to correct the Anaconda's weird gui.

So guys please help me out with this problem.

Regards,
Amol.

Hello:
Try adding the following to the boot prompt:
linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600

Once you have it typed in, then hit your enter key and see how it goes.

Hello:
Sure, or at least I will give it a whirl ... it will be in lay terms.

linux nodmraid -- will help in ignoring the sil controller .. sometimes the installation gets hung up on trying to determine the controller and often sees the sil controller as a raid setup.

mode=vesa -- will pass to the kernel that the hardware has a vesa compliant graphics card and monitor

resolution=800x600 -- will pass to the kernel that the resolution to be used will be 800x600

Once you have successfully installed the OS you can configure your graphic card and monitor go from there.

Also, while you are at it there is an anaconda bug which sometimes installs an i586 instead of a i686 kernel
so to assist in this your boot line should look like this

linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600 i686

Hello:

Actually during my previous trial with the installations i gave the option:
linux nodmraid and also i gave the options such as linux resolution=640x480, linux lowres, etc but nothing worked.
What do you suggest shall i try giving option (linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600 i686?
Will it really help showing the anaconda gui correctly?

Regards,
Amol.

Hello:
You should try:
linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600 i686

The mode=vesa along with resolution=800x600 i686 are likely key as you were having garbled graphics?

It will not hurt anything....... so try
linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600 i686

Hello:
The dual core will not be a problem I have an AMD dual core with both 32 and 64 running.
The DVD that you have could be either ? I have no idea ...... it will have one or the other but not both.

Hello,

But if the DVD supports only 32bit then shoudn't it give a error while booting from it?
Is there any other means to find it out whether the DVD is meant only for 32 bit systems and not meant for 64 bit?

Hello:
There will be no error either way as a 64 bit processor can handle a 32 bit OS. It doesn't matter .. you can install either with a 64 bit capable processor.
If you load the disc in windows you should be able to tell it will be labeled one way or the other.

But i've found CD and DVD's of fedora 6 which come in 2 different types of installation i.e. one for 32bit another for 64bit processors.
What do you suggest? whether i should try to install fedora 5 with the help of present DVD or should i go and look out for DVD for 64bit processor?

Also whether i should give the same option as told by you or do some modification in the same?

Regards,
Amol.

Hello Seve,

I tried installing with the option:
linux nodmraid mode=vesa resolution=800x600 i686
But the above command also gave the garbled gui once the anaconda starts.

I don't know where the problem is.

Regards,
Amol.
