FC5 -> FC6 Upgrade Hangs

I just started an upgrade of FC5 -> FC6 and it appears to have stalled at "Preparing transaction from installation source....". It took it about an hour to check dependencies and has now been on this step for the last 10 hours.

I thought to check whether it has perhaps run out of memory, so I ran 'cat /proc/meminfo' on a VT and it shows LowTotal: 385244 kB, LowFree: 5008 kB, SwapTotal: 313184 kB, SwapFree: 313184 kB. I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at....

Is it reasonable for it to take this long? I don't think it is. I love Fedora, but this is not a good thing at all. That someone else has it sitting at this point for two days is not a good sign either.

When I did the first yum update after installing FC5, I had to break it down so it didn't try to update everything at the same time in order for it to go. (e.g. 'yum update a* b* c* d*'). One would think Anaconda could do better than that!

gRRRRR....

P.S. I found a bugzilla entry but no solution! https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=212781

I did update form FC5 using to FC6 using dvd. Went just fine except for now well known update kernel bug and it took about 45 minutes total time.
Are you doing an internet update, that could take a very long time depending on your connection speed. Best think is to find a friend with a really fast connection download then upgrade.

I am installing from the hard drive and booted into the installer from the hard drive. There is no visible disk activity and it is not even managing to redraw my screen at this point.

I suspect that it ran out of memory and instead of raising an error, it just stopped. How could I verify that? I have a shell on Alt-F2.

UPDATE: I ran strace on anaconda, and it appears to be hung giving the following
message for the last 10 or 20 minutes straight:
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
rt_sigaction(SIGSEGV, {0x8229f0, [], 0}, {0x8229f0, [], 0}, 8) = 0
sigreturn() = ? (mask now [])

I have the same problem on my system. I installed my running FC 5 from DVD at that time and I can't remember that I had any problems. Now I wanted to upgrade it fo FC 6 using the DVD (yes, checked SHA1 and yes, checked media) but it also hangs at "Abhänigkeitsprüfung der zu installierenden Pakete..." ("Dependency check of packets to installl..."), right after I selected that anaconda should update the boot loader. Console 1 shows

No handlers could be found for logger "yum.YumBase"

Console 4 shows

failed to unlink /var/lib/rpm/__db.000
no roups missing
moving (1) to step postselection
selected kernel package for kernel

Are you sure it is hung, or is it perhaps working but with no sign of progress? It took my machine 50 minutes to do the dependency check, but it did eventually complete. The "Preparing transaction from installation source...." step just after that is where it seems genuinely stuck. You can use strace on VT2 to see what it is doing. In the dependency check stage I could see it was doing different things, mostly reading from the disk, but at the preparing transaction stage it goes for a while then starts repeating the segfault call I showed above. When I get a few hours to burn, I'll see if there is any way to see what it is doing just before the segfaults start. I think grep could do the trick, but I don't know that I will have grep in the installer.....

Yes, it does nothing obvious (just the mouse pointer is animated) so one could have the feeling that it hangs. After 10 min my patience was over. I will not wait for hours. Conclusion: I will wait a few days for a fix, otherwise I will move to some other distribution.

I was able to complete the upgrade by uninstalling 400 of the 1000 packages that I had installed in FC5. Apparently the transaction set was just too big for Anaconda/yum. (This ought to be worked on, IMO.)
