OpenSUSE overtakes Ubuntu

I just noticed on Distrowatch that in the last 30 days OpenSUSE (up to 2455) has overtaken Ubuntu (Down to 2300) as the most visited website! That's a turn-up for the books! Can it be people have taken the M$/Novell love-in seriously and want to protect themselves or are just curious? Personally, I wouldn't touch it with someone else's 10-foot bargepole! I also notice that Fedora is on the decrease after it's brief raise to fame

Just the hype over the newest release. This stuff switches back and forth all the time. FC will be back up there once the FC7 releases start.

Yes, I always notice that the second, third and fourth place slots always change when a distro releases a new version but I can't recall seeing Ubuntu knocked off the top spot before, at least, not for a long time.

It could also be because the deal brought publicity way outside the Linux community that people who didn't previously even know what Linux is are now checking it out (probably under assumption it'll be free Windows for them).

Don't waste your time :-)

Hi all,

I may just be stupid but I tried openSuse 10.2 for the past week and have not been impressed. I put fc6 back on in its place last night. I've got ubuntu 6.10, fc5, and fc6 on the same box. I use the partion that fc6 is on now to try the latest releases of the top 3.

I probably shouldn't complain too much because I haven't tried Suse in the last few releases so it isn't as comfortable to me as fedora or ubuntu. One gripe is the repository info is not as easy to locate and yast2 update seemed clunky. I stopped the update mid-stream a couple of nights ago because it was taking so long and I wanted to go to sleep. I've done this many times with yum/yumex and synaptic on ubuntu. They just add to the already downloaded packages on the next run. The 10.2 version could not be coaxed into completing the updates the next time I logged. It thought the updates had been already been successfully applied. :-(

It may get better after a few weeks. I also noticed that the download mirrors are not as fast as fedora.

IMHO fedora just needs yumex to be as quick as synaptic on Ubuntu and I would be a happy camper with it. I think the deep pockets of Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth have helped this distro alot.

I was curious to see what all the fuss was about so decided to give suse x86_64 a go , It installed flawlessly and I manage to build the ATI driver for it so I will give a test period and see if see if I can live with the guilt

Some how I dont think I will be swapping

{EDIT} package management is total crap and it seems buggy , no change here then.
My machine is now a suse free zone again

I don't think the distrowatch stats have ever deserved to be taken seriously. Unless you're a distro fanboy with nothing better to do.

The only ones that take it seriously are the ubuntu fanboys. It makes me gag everytime I hear one of them mention that ubuntu is #1 on distrowatch.

If they changed the Ubuntu's name, gave it a blueish theme, and had proper root facilities, instead of just sudo by default, it would be an amazing distro, even better than 6.10 is now.

Does being #1 on Distrowatch mean that more people are using it, or more people are having trouble with it and visiting the site to beg for help?

I'm new to Fedora, refugee from SuSE. I am having trouble getting Samba to work here, but I ain't going back.
I'm about to start begging for help on the Fedora site, so maybe that will drive up the site visit count and displace Upantu

I have used SuSE x86_64 for over a year, and found it to function great, run fast, and was also easy to maintain. The only trouble was I couldn't live with the guilt

And in case you haven't noticed, I obviously haven't figured out the proper quoting technique. Sorry Leigh123

Oh, there is another quote option down under this message window. So I guess I should not only click QUOTE, but should follow up with checking "Quote message in reply?"

And there went a third option; quote the old fashioned way :O
