network dropped after restart WTF!?

Okay, I'll admit i'm a total newb to linux. I do have a problem that shouldn't be happening (otherwise I doubt it would be a problem! :P )

I don't use DHCP on my network (added lvl of wireless security) I am using a wired network on my FC6 box, and I configured the IP addressing properly.

IP Address: 192.168.1.40
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 (I modified it in the router to be such)
DNS 1: 71.243.0.12
DNS 2: 71.250.0.12

and it worked fine. ONCE. Then I rebooted, and tried a fresh install (trying to gain access to the extras repo, still no dice there URL issue, I think it's caused by the lack of network)

Now, with the same config, nothing. No internet, no network connectivity. Nothing.

Again, being new to *nix in general I'm not even sure of the console command that's equivalent to IPCONFIG in windows.

Please oh Please help!

Thanks
Bob

ipconfig in windows = ifconfig in linux
u can change ur card settings using ifconfig eth0 <ip_add> netmask <netmask> up

or

vim /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and make the requisite changes.

or

type 'setup', select network configuration and make the changes. then punch in 'service network restart'.

regs,
FDD

alright, i tried your suggestion, and it worked right up to the "service network restart" part.

Error was: bash: service: command not found.

I tried all 9 combonations of the above.

and no dice....?
