Newbie needs help

Please help. I've just installed Core 6 on my Toshiba Equium laptop (ditched windows it was soooo slow).
When I installed the installation stated it had to run in text mode due to a lack of memory. Apart from that everything seemed to go fine. But . . . I have 2 problems

1. When I boot up the laptop Core 6 starts up fine but not in the GUI and I'm left with the 'dos like' login prompt. I've picked up from the forums that I need to login and then type startx to fire up the gui and it works fine (and looks good) after that. My question is how do I get the GUI to fire up at the start and avoid the login nonsense (the laptop is used by others, including the kids and they will not be impressed).

2. My wifi connection doesn't seem to be working. The card an atheros (or something similar)

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
