Question how do i encrypt a backup?

hi

i use 64 bit FC5 on my server and need to do a nightly backup of /home over the network

the destination network drive is in a physically insecure location - nothing i can do about that sadly

what i need to do is have some way of ensuring that if someone walks off with the network drive, the data therein is unusable to them

the backup will only be needed by me in a disaster type scenario - so i don't need on the fly decryption or anything like that - just so long as i can extract the data if/when i need to and the bad guys can't !

anyone any thoughts as to the most straightforward way to do this ?

thanks

neill

i looked at truecrypt but there's no 64-bit fc5 package

if i compile the source from scratch will that be OK, or can i use the 32-bit RPM ?

Sorry, i habe no experiance with 64bit.
I think trying first rpm is easier than compiling at first.
For FC6 i found the rpm on some website (sorry, link is gone, i keep looking for it)
If you try, please post the result.

http://luks.endorphin.org/dm-crypt

According to the docs it also works with container files.
So you could build up a container, mount it to loop and go on.

"To test LUKS, you can use loop to make a blockdev out of any container file. The only requirement is that it's larger than 1mb. I'll use /dev/loop5 in the following examples."
