Udev freezes at startup

Just yesterday, my laptop was working fine with fedora core 5.

Now in the startup sequence, When the screen shows:

Starting udev:

It just pauses there. It never makes any further progress. I have restarted several times, but the result is always the same.

How can I fix this problem, and is any further information needed?

I have a prob with hp's nc6120, I've installed fc6 and it hangs on boot, but it's not necessarilly on udev, sometimes it gets a bit further. But it hangs. Every time.

I have a feeling it has sth to do with acpi or the motherboard. There's been a known problem with kernel 2.6.13 not working on this laptop due to some IDE chipset problems. But things have been corrected. Maybe a kernel regression?

Anyways, I am looking forward to resolving this issue..

ok, then go ahead and disable it in grub loader -
add to boot string:

acpi=off

I'll give it a try later today..

Oh, and it fails on mounting local filesystems?
I've got and "old" /home partition I've chosen to be used here also.. That is the only local part that could be failing, altho I'm not sure why it would, works perfectly okay on the installed slack..

You know, that's interesting. I have a Dell laptop, when I boot FC6 after the nice loading page, it goes back to a text login (black screen w/ simple login) and hangs there for a while before waking itself up and moving on to the graphical login screen... hmmmm....

Problem solved..

Looks like the reiserfs /home partition was causing kernel to get into a CPU lock. For some reason mount segfaulted on it. Need to investigate this further. But I've removed it from fstab and am enyoing compiz on an Intel fb

now onto customizing it..

thanks!
