Help with Maxtor external HD
I just got a Maxtor OneTouch III. It's a 60GB "portable storage" External USB HD.

I'm running on FC5. After plugging in it, the icon for it appeared on my desktop, but I couldn't navigate through it. This was while I wasn't logged on as root. I logged off then back on as root this time, and when I opened the HD's icon, I could navigate but I couldn't write to it or edit in any way. There were some files inside including some installation programs that wanted it to install to my the Program Files folder of my nonexistent C drive. The box says that it's for Windows 2000 or Windows XP, but I figured there was a way for it to work for me, since linux kicks so much ass. I didn't try anything with the terminal since I'm only moderately familiar with it. How do I get this thing to work for me? Thanks.

Hi Spike.
I got this solution from Rondonjin a while back.

drill down to:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", \
PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'K=%k; K=$${K#usbdev}; printf bus/usb/%%03i/%%03i $${K%%%%.*} $${K#*.}'", \
NAME="%c", MODE="0666"
and change it from MODE="0644" as you see above.

Thanks, but it wasn't at 0666; it was already at 0644. Any other ideas?

Guess that was about as clear as mud. Sorry about that. Change it FROM 0644 TO 0666!

Hey, I changed it, restarted my computer, and the drive continues to not allow me write to or edit it in anway.
Here's a screenshot of when I drag and drop anything into the drive's folder. Maybe the built-in software complicating things.

Huh!?!
Well, I'll be dipped! Thought for sure that'd do it! Worked like a charm for me! Lemme chew on this a little while. Maybe if seve or rondonjin reads this, they'll have a better idea. I admit, I'm stumped!
Maybe check the /media and all sub-folders for 777 R+W+X permissions?
Dan
EDIT: Got the screenshot.

Hello:
Just a thought?
Shouldn't you just plug it in as user and use GParted to format the drive? Unless, you want to plug it into your windows OS first ?
Since the drive is new, it is likely in raw state?
