snort eating up all my memory

Current version of snort is 2.6.0.2-2.
I've got a bunch of services running fine: dhcp, bind, sendmail, ftp, cups, samba, nfs, ssh... Altogether, they don't top up 512MB RAM. When I start snort, though, it rapidly eats up all my RAM, system starts to page like crazy and eventually comes to a crawl. I've seen that snort version 2.6.1 (Nov 16th) sports a "New pattern matcher with a significantly reduced memory footprint" and Snort News reads: "Snort v2.6.1.1 corrects a resource usage issue exhibited in Snort v2.6.1 in certain network environments". Has anyone experienced the same problem I have and did upgrading make it go away ?

tia...

P.S. You can read my specs below...

Ok, so 2.6.1.1 solves the problem. I had a rough time compiling it, though. Can't wait for the RPM to be updated (tried to build the rpm too, but unsuccessfully).

P.S. Still it sucks up all remaining RAM, but it stops there and doesn't swap.
