FC6: Is there anything I need to now before I put in a Dual Core CPU?

Hi.

I have FC6 installed on a PC with a single core AMD Athlon CPU. Today I receive a new AMD 64 X2 Double Core CPU.
Is it just to put in the new one and start up?
Do I have to do anything to get full performance of the CPU?
AMD have 2 drivers to the CPU made for Linux on their website (AMD ), do I need those?

Ahaf.

If the socket matches and the chips set supports the x2 then the only thing to be concerned about is adiquit cooling and power.
I think udev and hal will handle the new cpu.
Make sure you boot into your bios first and check things out.

Doesn't one of the S's in FOSS stand for surprise?

I don't know about x2's but if drivers were needed I would think a 1000 kids would have posted by now.

You can try it or wait here for an x2 expert.

I'm not speaking from experience, however this 'driver' listed on the AMD site seems to be for frequency control, eg changing the speed of the cpu.

If you don't install it it will run at its max speed (it will idle of course) but during load it will use its max rated speed which may not be do good if you're on a LAPTOP because it eats battery. For a desktop there shouldn't be an issue.

In time this 'driver' will be integrated into the kernel -- one would think
