INstallation Fails with 4 minutes remaining...

Gday guys,

Newb to linux altogether here, just build a computer I will be using as a server. I hope I pick it up quickly and stay around the linux OS ... I've heard good things about it!

So anyway, I downloaded fedora 6 (the DVD .iso file). I burnt it to dvd ... did all the usual stuff, the installation was going fine but it stopped with four minutes remaining.

I left it overnight but it was still at the same point. Since then I have tried three more times all with the same result.

I used the 'test media' function and it says everything is alright there.

Is it possible that I just have a corrupt version? Should I try downloading it again?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance!

No, I doubt that the version's corrupt. There may be some incompatibility with graphics that a text install could bypass and then set up graphics afterwards. Did you notice what was being installed at the fail point?

I have had problems like this before.
I now install in text mode and use nodma option:
Code:
Boot: linux ide=nodma text

yes i would try the text install, also if you are selecting to install from extras, i would not do that, and add the extras stuff after install

Forgot to mention. If you install with "ide=nodma" you should, after install is done,
go edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and remove the "ide=nodma" option if it's there.

Thanks guys,

I'll give this a go over the next few hours and let you know how I get on.

EDIT:

Ok, well it seemed to install ok, the computer then restarted. It started checking everything and enabling and starting etc etc... and then it gets to a login screen as foillows:

dhcppc2 login:

I didn't create a login ... what will my login be?

I know what my root password is but I didn't see anything about a login?

I read the installation guide and it says that I should come to a setup agent where I create a user and a password. Is this different because I did a text install?

Whats going on!

login: root
password: (your root password)

Then use GUI tools or "adduser" in a terminal to add users.
