Hello:
Mmmm...
The only other thing I can think of at the moment for you to try is:
yum update xorg-x11-drv*
Also:
Can you open a terminal and run glxgears
and glxinfo
without any errors?

Yes, without erros.
The only thing i can think of is the first time that i installed wine, I compiled it from source. Perhaps that installation has not been removed? Is there an easy way to check and/or remove that old installation?
EDIT:
Also, some full screen graphical games still restart the x server

Hello:
Yep, that might be [and probably is ] the issue alright.
When you installed it, what directory did you install it from?
were you root etc.
and
When you removed it how did you do that?

installed from /home/username/Desktop/wine-0.9.24
I actually have no clue where it installed wine. I was going blindly back then.

Hello:
How did you uninstall it?
Or, did you uninstall it before you used yum?

I thought that yum remove wine* uninstalled it, bit it doesnt look like it did.
can i locate the files manually and delete them?
also, i ran the ./configure command in the source files without actually installing it to see if there were still conflicts.
I still get this error (without actually installing)
configure: WARNING: Wine will be build without OpenGL or Direct3D support
configure: WARNING: because something is wrong with the OpenGL setup:
configure: WARNING: No OpenGL library found on this system.

Hello:
Does the /home/username/Desktop/wine-0.9.24/ directory have a readme file or such that provides any clue as to what files and or where the files would be installed and or how to un-install?
It's most likely that the original install over-wrote one or more essential files?
Edit:
From the Winehq site
you should be able to un-install with make uninstall
However, before you do this make sure that you do a yum remove wine*
when it's done then type
yum list installed | grep wine
to make sure all the rpms are removed
reboot then logged in as root
cd /home/username/Desktop/wine-0.9.24/
and run
make uninstall
reboot and try
the yum install wine*
