Arrow VMware Server Fedora Core 6 fix in here !

    Hi everyone;

I looked around the forum, and I didn't find anybody posting this information so here goes, I know some of us are in a state of despair because of the vmware-config.pl file is not compiling / working properly (I need it for assembly programming), however after a lengthy investigation it turned out that Fedora Core 6 doesn't have the following file :

    Code:
    /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/linux/config.h
therefore this fix is as easy as it gets, just do the following :

    Code:
    touch /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/linux/config.h
This will do nothing more than just create an empty file in that directory if it doesn't exist. If it exists already, then no worry this will just update it's timestap, nothing of concern here.

Then download the latest version of VMware from http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

    Become root :
    Code:
    su
Navigate to the directory containing the RPM, and do the following :

    Code:
    rpm -ivh VMware-server*.rpm
After the installation, execute the following as root :

    Code:
    vmware-config.pl
    And your done.

    Enjoy

Ahhh, USA? I have a feeling if you get VMWare working it still wont be what you are looking for. VMWare, like QEMU uses virtual hardware instead of your machines physical hardware. Sorry...

I have used it in windows before and configured it specialy to work with my existing hardware. So it can be done to some degree.

Hope it works out I like VMWare, I just wish it had 3D acceleration so I could game off it. Still a fine app and a must have now that it's free. Also thanks to tuxic for this fix. Installing now.

Hmm, let's see, try the following :

    1 - open a terminal

    2-
    Code:
    ls -l /dev/hda*
You should observe an output similar to what's below:

    Code:
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 0 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 1 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda1
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 2 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda2
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 5 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda5
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 6 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda6
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 7 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda7
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 8 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/sda8
Please note that my hardive is SATA not IDE that's why you see sda in my output instead of hda, in your case, since you are not using SATA you should see the following :
    [Tuxic@xxxxx:~ >]$ ls -l /dev/hda*
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 0 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 1 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda1
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 2 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda2
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 5 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda5
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 6 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda6
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 7 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda7
    brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 8 Oct 31 14:19 /dev/hda8
    [/code]

Not necessarly identical, however, each line should ideally begin with a

    Code:
    brw-r----- 1 root disk
This is a descreption of the devices permessions and who they belongs to.

According to the info you are providing me, I am predicting that you are going to have at least one line that doesn't start with
    Code:
    brw-r----- 1 root disk
Now once you determine which /dev/hda doesn't have the right permessions, all you have to do is the following:
    Become root:
    Code:
    su
    As root do :
    Code:
chmod g+rw /dev/hda"replace the quotes and what's inside them with the device number at the end"
Now this will fix your issue, if it this happens again, then maybe you need to look around and see what abnormal usage could have caused it.
But if this was a one time glitch, or a misconfigured device, then chances are this won't happen again, and you are clear for sailing my friend

    64-bit version

For 64-bit FC6 you will need to change the directory when using the touch command so it will become:

    Code:
    touch /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-x86_64/include/linux/config.h

There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the
set of C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to
rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory.

    Problem solved
Anaconda installed i586 kernel instead of i686.
Changed it, and everything is fine

    Hi guys!

I tried to install vmware server and something was wrong BUT the workstation is working!!

I share with you the solution.

The kernel in new fedora is:

title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen)[B][U] !!!!!!!!! IT IS !!!!!!!
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet
    module /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen.img

but we need the old one whitout xen

So just put in the dvd or cd anyway and install the another kernel

    rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm

    and uninstall the wrong kernel-devel:

    rpm -e kernel-devel

    than

    rpm -Uvh kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm

That restart the system and just start the another kernel without xen!!!

and run the vmware-config.pl don't need config.h file and don't need the any-any update.

The install will pick up the correct kernel because it is correct and much kernel-devel.

I tried to install and set up with xen kernel but the kernel-devel is does not appropriate.

The vmware-config.pl is always chechking it!

    So

    rpm -e kernel-devel.
rpm -Uvh kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm or rpm -ivh kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm
    rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm
    restart with old kernel!!!!

run vmware-config.pl (just the vmware workstation worked for me)

    Enjoy it!

By the way I did not try the bus share things on virtual scsi bus but this workstation did not warning me for config.

You know when you tri on vmware-workstation share the virtual scsi bus is always warning this is not a server you must need a server for this things.

But this vmware did not do it.

So it could be works I'll tri it and share with you.

    Anyway.
