Exclamation Newbie not liking the taste of YUM

Hey Kids, I'm a complete Linux moron who's now running Fedora Core 5.

I'd like to update it with loads of stuff like 'xine'. So, I try to use YUM to get it, and the following happens.

[root@localhost ~]# yum install xine
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
core [1/3]
updates [2/3]
extras [3/3]
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
No Match for argument: xine
Nothing to do

Seems to have 'Nothing to do' quite a lot. It did install Amarok for me. But that's it so far. Tried 'mplayer' and a whole load of others, but same story. 'Nothing to do', no match for that argument.

I did a YUM search in each case too, several different packages would be listed, but no Xine, no mplayer, nothing I was actually looking for.

It's probably something small that I haven't got a clue about. Help would be apriciated.

i think what is happening is that you dont have the repository with xine actually listed for yum to search from.

As always.. read this

http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html

and xine / mplayer you will have

Hello:
I would suggest installing yumex to help with your search
yum - y install yumex
If you would like to add some extra repos to get more and or different software then please have a look at

Cheers guys.

I've used YUM to install YUM Extender as suggested. That went well.

Now as for Repos: It seems that I have the Core, Updates and Extras for the i386 architecture.
I went through the list of packages in YumEx and it doesn't have xine or mplayer or anything else I'm looking for right now. No repos, no can do I guess...

So which Repos should I get? And how can this n00b put them into his Fedora?
I've read the mentioned article, but I'm not sure which section will help...

That site seemed to have what I needed. However, when I downloaded the RPM, the 'Installing Packages' window would appear which would be frozen, even after a good few minutes.

Attempted with both:
livia-realease-5-6
livia-realease-5-8

Also, while I was there I found xine and mplayer's RPMs. I had a go at installing them from there, however in both cases, I would recieve an 'Error Resolving Dependancies' message.

Any ideas?

Bataneart,

Yum in great and will work wonderfully, once you know how it actually works

In your case, when it says "nothing to do" that can mean a couple of different things

#1. you spelled the name of the package wrong or missed the case sensitivity. For example, yum install xine versus yum install Xine

#2. The repos that you are searching don't have the particular package. For example, you have to configure the Macromedia repository in order to get the flash plugin package. It's not included with any of the standard fedora repos

#3. The package you are trying to install, is already installed on your system. This was probably the case with xine. Chances are that it was already installed. So, when you asked yum to install it, it didn't have anything to do since it was already installed.

In addition, most of the multimedia stuff doesn't just work out of the box with FC. This is because of staying true to the Open Source standards and also avoiding potential legal issues. I would suggest going through the Stanton Finley guide that is talked about here. He gets you through the various multimedia things and does a fine job of explaining what he is doing along the way. I've used it numerous times and have incorporated it into my standard build procedures for a workstation. I would expect an FC6 guide before too long

Hope this helps.
