FC5 and Sympatico.ca - net setup help needed
I have Sympatico high speed - have been a subscriber for some time using an old Alcatel modem. I recently installed (clean) FC5 and can not access the internet. I am a Linux newbie, but I did have FC3 working and I upgraded to FC5 and it worked but due to other issues with the upgrade I decided to do a clean install. I can get the internet when I use the Knoppix CD, no problem. Trouble is, the network setup stuff with FC5 didn't give me many options when it came to network setup. I suspect the installer found my network card but not my modem... but I am guessing. How can I set up the network card AND the modem so I can get to installing / updating the packages I want?
TIA

ou can configure a DSL connection by going to System-->Administration-->Network.
Then click on the "New" button. At this point you can use the xDSL choice and follow the prompts to enter your settings and user name and passowrd for the DSL b1xxxxxx account.

Thank you very much. I got it running right away. Trouble is, it won't seem to stay connected. I lose the connection after a couple minutes and when I try to reactivate it, I get a message saying the network cannot be activated.
Any thoughts?

What Sympatico modem are you using (brand and model number)? If it's something like a Speedstream 5200 with an onboard router, you might be able to configure your Sympatico connexion in the router configuration and just configure a standard network connexion inside linux. Is the modem connected to an rj45 or a usb port?

Its an older Alcatel Speed Touch Home. I will try to configure it as a router (if I can...). The modem is connected to a standard network port, not a USB port. I need to add to what I posted yesterday... The connection was maintained while I used YUM with the terminal window and while I used the software update routine. But again this morning, while using only an internet browser, the connection was lost after only a couple minutes and I couldn't restart it.
For fun, I rebooted to Windows and couldn't connect to the web without doing a hard boot on my Sympatico modem - turn it on and off. Something in FC5 causing a modem incompatibility issue?

Look under your modem for the model number and give us that number.
As for the pppoe configuration.
As for the ppp0e configuration. Goback in network, hardware tab, select the edit icon and check the detail configuration such as giving permission to the user for reconnecting to the internet.

Can you show the content of /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf?
BTW replace the b1 account with x's. so that nobody sees it.

Hello again, thanks for all your help so far. I have installed and tried two other distros with the same result, they all drop the connection while browsing after a very short time. My first encounter with Linux with with Knoppix 4 - it did not suffer from the same problem. I used it to keep me going when my Windows system became corrupt. I have since tried Knoppix 5, Mandriva 2007 and Debian Sarge and all suffered from same dropped connection while surfing. While updating software, I can keep the connection open with a terminal window as long as necessary. Any ideas?
