I just upgraded from Redhat 7 to Fedora Core 5. (Due to some other initial problems, I did a clean install and reformatted the drives).
When Linux is starting, udev fails to start and causes a kernel dump. Here is the message from dmesg:

I'm not a newbie, but I've been comfortably using my last installation for years, and I have no idea what any of this means or what to do about it. The hal daemon also will not work, and I have a feeling it is tied into the failure of udev to start.
Any ideas?
I'm using an old HP Vectra, Pentium ll.
I just want to be able to mount my CD-ROM and CD burner.
