FC5- cant connect to network w/o restart

I have FC5 on my laptop and it connects to my network fine when it is connected during startup. However, if i plug the ethernet in after startup, it wont connect. It also won't connect if I plug it in while the computer is hibernating and then start it. I have tried restarting various processes (network, network manager, and the ethernet device itself) but it did not work. Does anyone have any idea why it won't connect?
